Medical Transportation in East Atlanta
DeKalb and Fulton County · 30316, 30317 · about 5.5 miles and 9 minutes from our Decatur base in typical conditions
East Atlanta is the closest area we serve outside our own ZIP — 5.5 miles and about 9 minutes from the base, straight up Memorial Drive or Flat Shoals. East Atlanta Village, Ormewood Park, Glenwood Park, Brownwood and the Gresham Park edge sit either side of I-20 in the 30316 and 30317 ZIPs. It is a mix of century-old bungalows and newer infill, and the transportation issue here is almost entirely about doorways and porches rather than distance.
Insurance and private pay. Heart2Heart bills insurance for medically necessary transports such as dialysis, wound care and emergency-department related trips — coverage depends on the plan and is not guaranteed, and we can’t confirm accepted plans or authorization rules online. Rides booked and paid for directly on this website are paid by card at booking. We are not a Georgia Medicaid NEMT provider. If you have Medicaid transportation benefits, Georgia’s broker Verida arranges those rides at no cost to you — call 404-209-4000 (Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett) or 678-510-4555 (North Georgia), at least 3 business days ahead. Heart to Heart does not bill the VA or accept VA benefits as payment. Veterans may book and pay privately. For transportation arranged or paid for by the VA, contact your VA facility’s Beneficiary Travel office before booking.
Dialysis centers we serve in East Atlanta
Addresses and station counts below come from the federal dialysis facility register.
2886 Memorial Dr SE, Atlanta 30317 · 21 stations
The nearest dialysis unit is on Memorial Drive, minutes away
Fresenius Kidney Care Candler Road at 2886 Memorial Dr SE, 30317, is the registered unit closest to East Atlanta — 21 stations, despite the name, physically on Memorial Drive. From an East Atlanta Village or Ormewood Park address it is a very short drive.
Some East Atlanta patients dialyse slightly further east instead, at DaVita Eastlake on Candler Road or USRC DeKalb on Memorial Drive, usually because that is where the chair time was available. All are routine destinations for us and each has its own page with the verified address.
Bungalows, high porches and no side entrance
The housing that defines East Atlanta — 1910s to 1930s bungalows around Flat Shoals, Glenwood and Custer — sits high off the ground on a pier foundation, with five to nine front steps, a single narrow front door and often no usable side or rear access. There is frequently no route into the house that avoids the front steps.
For a wheelchair passenger that is a two-crew job. For a stretcher it is a stair chair and a careful plan. Please give us the step count and tell us whether there is a railing on both sides; those two facts decide the crew before dispatch.
Parking is the other constraint
Streets in East Atlanta Village and around Glenwood Park are narrow with parking on both sides, and newer infill blocks add construction closures. A stretcher vehicle needs a stopping place close to the door, and sometimes that means the crew asks a neighbour to move a car.
If you know the street is tight or there is a driveway we can use, put it in the booking notes. It does not change the price, which is base fare plus measured mileage, but it saves real time on arrival.
Short trips, honest pricing
A five-mile ride is not almost free. Every trip carries the vehicle base rate and our published trip minimum, because the crew’s time, the equipment and the two-person lift are the same on a short run as a long one. The mileage component is simply small.
Grady and Emory Midtown discharges are our most common East Atlanta bookings after dialysis. We are not affiliated with any hospital named here, and all service is private pay with the price shown before you book.
